What Stuart Scott Taught Us About Business Relationships

What Stuart Scott Taught Us About Business Relationships | HTR

Stuart Scott, notable sportscaster and ESPN anchor, recently lost his ongoing battle with cancer at 49 years old. With a face that anyone who owns a television would recognize, Scott was known for his unique and admirable demeanor as well as his incredible way with words. On July 16, 2014, he accepted the Jimmy V Award at the ESPYS and blew viewers away with a speech that was one for the ages. During his speech, Scott stated,

“Every day, I am reminded that our life’s journey is really about the people who touch us.”

Leave Your Mark
From the beginning of your career until the day you retire, what helps you pave the way from point A. to point B.? Many aspects contribute but the most important one is the people. Positive business relationships play a vital role in your development, both as a professional and as a human being. In the technology rental industry, there are many benefits of utilizing one vendor over the course of several years; at Hartford, our goal is to be that vendor you rely on long term.

Our sales team is focused on building lasting relationships with our customers to ensure that each interaction has a positive outcome, whether that outcome is an order for audio visual equipment and one task checked off their to-do list or a simple smile from a ‘happy birthday’ email. Relationships are like flowers, once the seed is planted, it will still need constant nurturing for growth. Business relationships are no exception to this, and that’s one of the many lessons we learned from Stuart Scott during his time on earth. Many of his colleagues and the athletes he encountered throughout his career are continuing to express their gratitude, respect, and admiration towards him. He continues to have a lasting impression on the people that he worked with and that is something all professionals should strive for.

Selling Service Over Business
Throughout his career, Scott analyzed and discussed athletic performances that ranged from unimpressive to incredible with his own style and grace. He maintained positive professional relationships with these athletes of various sports and skill levels as well as with his colleagues. Regardless of his assessment of a game, team, or opposing opinion, he was still very much respected and praised by the people he came across. This is a part of what defined his success. At Hartford, if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we will always try to get it for you or find someone who does. No matter what the outcome is, our priority, first and foremost, is to leave a lasting impression on everyone we come across. Whether our chat ends in a contract for an order or a referral elsewhere, we want to continue to maintain our “not just equipment” reputation. Thus, it’s really the service that we sell and we enjoy every minute of it. As Stuart Scott would say, our sales team is “cool as the other side of the pillow.”

Rest in peace, Stuart. Thank you for being an inspiration to all. Boo-yah!
