Unraveling the Recent iPhone Announcement | HTR

Three Models Aimed at Three Targets?

A few days ago, Apple launched the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, all edge-to-edge displays equipped with better Face ID, more water resistance, longer battery life and faster processors, which are suggested to run apps up to nine times faster than the last generation.

All three units run on the Intelligent A12 Bionic, which is their next-generation Neural Engine. It allows for improved augmented reality experiences, better portraits with Depth Control plus speed and efficiency:

  • Up to 50% faster graphics performance
  • Up to 15% faster performance cores
  • Up to 50% lower power usage in efficiency cores

If your company is leasing iPhones, this announcement may be a bit confusing, especially when you compare it to last year’s 8 and X introduction.

Let’s break it down, shall we? The information sited below is sourced by Apple, Fast Company and Mashable.

iPhone XR

The entry price point for the X models is priced at even a lower cost than the iPhone X. It has the following features:

  • 6.1” screen size
  • Six different color case options
  • One12 MP rear camera, the first time the company released this type of camera
  • 2x faster sensor for Smart HDR across your photos
  • New LCD Display with 326-pixel count
  • Storage options of 64, 128 and 256 GB

iPhone XS

This is the smallest model of the three with a 5.8” display. It hails the following features:

  • OLED Screen with 458-pixel count
  • Dual 12 MP TrueDepth camera for better Face ID and photos
  • Available in 64, 256 and 512 GB models

iPhone XS Max

In contrast to the XS, the Max has a 6.5” screen, iPhone’s biggest display ever. It also has the following features:

  • OLED Screen with 458-pixel count
  • Dual 12 MP TrueDepth camera for better Face ID and photos
  • Available in 64, 256 and 512 GB models

Apple’s Green Movement Also Announced

Each new iPhone will have a 100% recyclable logic board, which will prevent the mining of over 10,000 tons of ore in 2019. Other parts of the phone will use recycled plastic.

Apple’s GiveBack program allows for trade in of eligible devices in exchange for an Apple Store Gift Cards or a refund on their purchase. If the device isn’t eligible for credit, the company will recycle it for free, no matter the model or condition.

The ultimate goal is to produce a fully recyclable iPhone.

Observations on Which is Best for Business

With minor differences between the units (i.e. screen size, pixel count and storage) and pricing differences from $750 to $1,500, much of your decision should be based on how you will use the device and how much data will be stored on it.

I can see where photographers, videographers, event planners who plan to live stream and individuals who have high level positions or deal with sensitive company data being attracted to the XS or Max. However, if your organization, is just looking to replace iPhones that are coming to end of their lease term and want to position your employees for AI, the XR may be just the ticket.
